Student Recreation Center

Western Carolina University | Cullowhee, North Carolina

A 70,000sf addition to the existing student center reinforces the campus green and responds to the existing context.

In locating the new facility on the campus green – maximizing its connection to the existing Student Center – the recreation center addition responds to the architectural context of the nearby buildings. Wrapping around the existing gymnasium, the recreation center forms one edge of the campus green, displacing existing parking to reinforce the pedestrian nature of this space. The uniquely-shaped running track unifies the two wings of this facility while offering views of both the campus and the interior recreation areas, which include a two-court gym, fifty-foot high climbing wall, 9,000 square foot fitness floor, and two aerobics rooms.
