Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools | Carrboro, North Carolina
Based on the prototypical plan of Rashkis, Morris Grove Elementary School is a high performance educational facility that saves energy, conserves resources and provides a teaching tool for the students.
Natural daylighting is provided in every normally used room including classrooms, cafeteria, multi-purpose room and media center. Lighting controls are coordinated with the natural daylight reducing the amount of artificial lighting used. A stormwater harvesting system is provided that captures rainwater, cleans and filters it and uses it for flushing of plumbing fixtures and irrigation. A photovoltaic array and solar water heating system are also integrated into the electrical and plumbing systems to reduce energy and conserve resources. The site design for the project includes a round-about on Eubanks Road, which provides a safe, low-speed transition into the internal vehicular circulation pattern on site. Separate drop-off areas for parental drop-off and pick-up and for school buses are provided.
