Town of Chapel Hill | Chapel Hill, North Carolina
From the outset of the Chapel Hill Town Operations Center, three overarching goals guided the design and construction efforts: sustainable development, environmental sensitivity and fiscal prudence.
The facility relocates and consolidates the Public Works Departments on about 60 acres. The 100,000sf complex consists of three main buildings and six outbuildings housing the Public Works Administration, Field Operations and Fleet Maintenance Divisions. The outbuildings include material bunkers, storage sheds, a vehicle washing facility, a fueling station and covered parking structures for Town vehicles and trailers. A variety of sustainable features were implemented to conserve resources, reduce energy usage and protect the environment including a geothermal heating and air conditioning system and natural daylighting strategies.
