Home of UNC Women’s Basketball, as well as the university’s volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics programs, the renovation and addition to Carmichael Arena breathed new life into an aging facility.
The renovations and additions were focused on providing additional office space for athletics, air conditioning, an upgraded fire alarm system, a sprinkler system, improving acoustics and broadcast capabilities and addressing life safety and accessibility concerns. A center-hung videoboard was added, and the original 1960’s era façade was upgraded to make the arena more compatible with the architecture of the adjacent historic buildings. Key components of the project included updating the concourse amenities to improve the fan experience, as well as creating exhibits and displays on the history of the sports currently using the arena. A separate museum was also designed to feature the accomplishments of the Women’s Basketball program.
