A redeveloped center for student’s physical and mental fitness, a place to thrive and grow.
The Carmichael Wellness Center is a redevelopment of the existing recreation facilities on NC State’s campus. A collaboration with HOK, the $34M glassy, open facility adds approximately 90,000 sf of new fitness rooms, high performance spaces, as well as meeting and conference spaces, student lounge areas and administrative offices. The recreation spaces include a complex of climbing walls, weight training areas, cardio facilities, personal training spaces including a running track and turfed sprinting lanes. It provides NC State with an up-to-date and comprehensive wellness center for the student body. “A building is a building, but it’s what happens inside that really has an impact on students. We want to support students so they can be successful,” said Erick Hawkes, Director of Wellness and Recreation at NC State. “We’ve been very intentional about the features this building includes, and, in a larger sense, the new facility aligns with a whole host of changes we’ve made at Wellness and Recreation. Today’s students want and need more (than just a gym). We’ve reshaped our entire department to look at all the different dimensions of a person and this facility fulfills that goal.”
